Nova Scotia Highland Quest 2011 continued.

Nova Scotia Highland Quest 2011

Back from our great trip in Nova Scotia riding in the Highland Quest. Here are some pictures from our trip. Thanks to all who made this trip possible.

Our trip started here as we leave from the hotel.

Some of the great views as you drive around Cape Breton.

This was our starting point for the ride we did before the Highland Quest.

Trails were very well signed.

Out on the trails.

This trail was part of the trans Canada Trail.

Lots of riding beside scenic vistas.

Signs were in both English and Gaelic.

Lots of spots to stop and read about the area.

Riding in Cape Breton right along the coast, does it get any better then this!

The sun goes down after a great ride along the coast.

While in Sydney a visit to the Miners Museum is a must.

The visit is very realistic. You go into a circa 1920's coal mine. Being 6'2" was fun when the mine is 5' tall!

Another must stop is Fortress Louisbourg. This is where we had lunch. It is like going back in time to what it was like back then.

Dan and Mark. You get one spoon for everything you eat. That's just the way it was done. Good looking bibs as well!

This man was caught and charged with stealing a bottle of wine. As the french said "off with his head"! Oh we're too nice in Canada that was back at the homeland.

The coast by Louisbourg, bad weather moving in.

Sydney has a fiddle as large as the cruise ships that visit the city.

All this before we go out on the main reason we were visiting, the Highland Quest ride. More on that ride later.

Tilbury Mud Bog

Just back from a great weekend in Tilbury. Saturday we shot the Puddle Jump, Sunday was the Mud Bog. Here are some pictures from the mud pit. Thanks to all the people at Tilbury auto sales for putting on a great show.

Here are the 4 machines we were taking out for a test ride. A Black Centhor 2. The Yellow 703 Centhor 2. The red 2 Up Centhor 800 and the white Centhor 700.

ATV ride near Cochrane Alberta

Here are some pictures from our ride outside of Cochrane Alberta. The Alberta Off Highway Vehicle Association and the Calgary ATV Riders took Go Riding out for a ride in the Ghost Forest area about 1.5 hours from Calgary. Thanks to Garry, James, Doug and Dave for the great day. A very special thanks to Cycle Works Calgary for supplying the ATV's for the ride. We had a blast on the Ranger and the Razor.

Today our Real Riders Test Crew took out the new Can Am Commander 1000 for a test ride in the Port Severn area. A big thanks goes to the Baxter Trail Riders for helping us out with the location. That was one fun trail and a great test for the new Commander.

Baxter Severn ATV Trail Riders -Trail Building

Our crew was invited out today to do a story on a great example of clubs working together. The Baxter-Severn ATV Trail Riders with help from the Township of Severn had started to cut a new trail. When the club ran short on cash the Central Ontario ATV Club stepped in and helped cover the costs to finish the project. Hats off to both clubs for working together for the good of all riders.

ATV Tour in New Brunswick

We have 2 crews in New Brunswick. One on the trails doing a tour and the other out gathering some great tourism shots. Here is a sample of what the trip looks like.

Here is a shot from Hopewell Rocks on the Bay of Fundy. It was raining when we were there from high to low tide. Love the area. A must for anyone coming to New Brunswick.

Here are the boats at dock as the tide is coming in at Alma New Brunswick. This was right across the street from where we were staying.

This is a boat at dock ready to go to work on the Bay.

We visited the lighthouse at Cape Enrage at sunset to watch the sun go down. The whole coast along the Bay of Fundy is a fantastic place to drive along and stop to see the vistas.

Twin Mountain Snowmobile Club Fun Run

Finally some co-operation between a snowmobile club and an atv club. The Twin Mountain Snowmobile club joined together with Kawartha ATV Club as well as Haliburton ATV Club to work for the greater cause of creating better trails for both snowmobiles and ATV's to use. As far as we know this is the 1st time something like this has happened in Ont. Even with the wet and what turned into snowy conditions the 50 plus riders came out to celebrate and to help raise money for the clubs. Congrats to all those involved in making this event possible.

All roads in Tweed are ok for riding on except for the main street. We parked and rode right from where we were staying.

The club has done tons of work building this wooden road. The trail never gets dry here, so the wood was needed.

Mud was not a problem for the Rhino. Some small bridges gave it a challenge.

New Outlander 800 EFI X MR

Can Am also has new for 2011 a Mud Specific ATV, the Outlander 800R EFI X MR. Here are a few pictures and a short description.

Rotax® 800R EFI V-Twin engine at 71 HP. The liquid-cooled, single overhead
campower plant has four valves per cylinder and is fed by a
46mm throttle body and two VDO Siemens‡ fuel injectors.
The progressive throttle ensures power is manageable whether in precise
rock crawling or opening it up on the straights.

30" Tires!

Relocated radiator. The radiator of the Can-Am Outlander X mr ATV
is located to the front rack to keep it out of the muddy water, ensuring
all-day rides in the deep mud. The radiator features a durable guard
to protect it from debris and pivots for access to the Outlander
maintenance center.

Front and rear Air Control Suspension (ACS) The 2011 Can-Am Outlander
800R X mr comes equipped with an industry-exclusive, air-control suspension.
The ACS adjusts both the front and rear high-pressure gas Fox Racing
Shox-built suspension to six rider-selectable presets, allowing the rider
to increase ride height to its maximum level to aid in crossing mud holes.
This means the rider does not have to sacrifice ride comfort for ride height.
Simply adjust the pre-load down once maximum height is no longer needed,
and the suspension travel returns for trail-riding comfort. An added feature
of the ACS system is an air hose from the compressor that can be used to
fill tires while out on the trail.

Our friends at Napoloen BBQ supplied us with a portable BBQ that hooks onto the hitch on the truck. Great way to have a BBQ ready when out riding.

We used a small propane tank. You can hook it up with the larger tanks as well.

Motobishi Raptorex & Blackhawk Test Ride

Yesterday we were out in Haliburton with a great bunch of club members testing the Motobishi Raptorex 800 and the Blackhawk 700 side by side machines. Here are some pictures from the day. Full story will be in the next Go Riding Magazine.

We recently had a chance to get out and put the Arctic Cat mudpro 700 and 1000 through its paces on a little piece of property owned by our friends up at Bayou Park Marine. This property did not lack in the wet, sloppy and thick stuff that the mud pro's were designed for. It really was amazing just how much more ground clearance these machines come with. Of course having factory 29" maxxis tires doesn't hurt either. Add the factory snorkel and you have a very capable out of the box mud machine. While playing in the mud was fun, I was having a better time floating around in the water hole seeing just how well the snorkel worked as well as doing a few water wheelies just for fun.

Demo Rides at Can Am Spring Jam

Not only was the Can Am Spring Jam a great place to ride this year, it also offered riders an opportunity to go and demo ride different machines. Here is a look at what CFMOTO had on site.

I'll Take my mud on the ROCKS!

I have never been to the Can Am spring jam before so I was not sure what to expect. After hearing second hand what the Georgian Rocks trail is like I was expecting some rocks and water, but to say rocks and water does not do it justice. What I discovered like so many countless others, was tire cutting jagged boulders that required patience and finesse to navigate your way through unharmed. If that was not enough to keep your arms pumped, add in some very deceptive mud holes that started out as puddles but quickly swallowed machine after machine putting 4wheel drive and winches through their paces. Add in an all day constant rain fall to make the trails greasy and you had a recipe for a muddy wet day that left you feeling every Km of trail travelled at the end of the day. Thanks to Scott at Can Am for loaning me his Renegade 800 to shoot on the trails with, sorry it didn't come back looking the same as it did when I went out. I swear I tried to go around as much of it as I could.

Spring Jam 2010

Well we survived another year at Spring Jam. What a blast. Trying to shoot in the pouring rain is always a little fun, but we managed. Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

What a sight to see all the machines driving into town on the Rumble Ride.

Georgian Rocks was just that! Rocks, rocks, mud and water!

One of the mud holes that the Argo breezed right through.This hole was not as easy. Peter tried and tried, but had to back up and find another route.

While the ATVs had to follow the trail, this Argo took a short cut across the water.

Here is what our Grizzly looked like before going on the St. Charles Bear Rally and then after when we got home. Worked great in the deep stuff except for when we lost a tire valve stem in one of the mud holes. That took the air right out of our day!

Special thanks goes to the Yamaha crew who were on site to help us get back staging.

My first ATV shoot of the season and I was covered from head to toe in Northern Ontario Mud. If you are looking for an awesome atv mud event book the last Saturday in April off on your calender and make the trip to St. Charles Ont. According to some of the 700 plus that attended this event, the water was lower this year than most other times. Let me tell you though, if this was low water conditions I can't wait to see what it will be like when the water level is "normal" as it was I managed to find myself stuck in holes that had me wishing I had chest waders on, not just rubber boots. I definetly put our Yamaha 700 Grizzly through its paces, including how well it rides back to the truck on a flat tire. I managed to rip the valve stem right out of the tire while trapped in one of the countless mud holes. With each rut I encountered I was thankful for the powersteering. Not once did I come out of a "hole" and feel tired from working the quad from side to side looking for any piece of solid ground to gain a little more traction. I will let the pictures tell the tale from here on in.

COATV Grand Opening of "The Link" Trail

Sunday was a big day for ATV riding in Simcoe County. The COATV Club had the Grand Opening ride for "The Link" trail. This short run on a rail bed and along a county road is the first time a road allowance has been issued for ATV use. Congratulations to the club for all the work that went into getting this done. This is for a one year trail so lets hope all riders stick to the rules when riding on this section.

St Charles Bear Rally 2010

This was our 2nd time attending the Bear Rally, and if looking for an early season mud run is what you are after then keep open the last Saturday in April for this ride!

Thanks to our hosts while in the area. We had a fantastic stay at Victoria Lodge.

Lots of ATV's showed up. Estimate was over 6 to 700

Cooks were busy. Over 800 cooked dogs and chili as well.

New Season Ahead

Now that spring is here in a big way we are getting ready for our upcoming season of Go Riding TV. The show is in the production process and new shoot locations are being set up. First shoot will be in St Charles on April 24th. Then we will be at the COATV Grand Opening of the new link trail. First weekend in May we will be in Parry Sound for Spring Jam. And on May 8th in Haliburton for a fun run. See you on the trails.
